Goodreads Review:
What an excellent surprise! I was definitely pretty pessimistic heading into this book. I LOVED the first two books in this series, but was so incredibly bored by King’s Cage that I lost a lot of love for the series. When this book came out, a lot of people read it and thought it was super slow-paced, and the average Goodreads rating was relatively low. So, I had low expectations for sure; I expected 650+ pages of being bored.
Damn, I was so wrong. This was EXCELLENT. The characters were great (I loved Iris), the different perspectives kept me flipping the pages, and I ultimately flew through the novel. Overall, I felt the pace was generally faster than in King’s Cage, and because of that I was super invested all the way through. Now, King’s Cage happens to have one of the higher ratings on Goodreads out of the series, although I’ve heard mixed things about it personally. That said, I feel King’s Cage was a major filler book, and could’ve been majorly condensed and added to the end of Glass Sword. One of the critiques of this series is that it is pretty tropey/generic, and I just wanted to go on the record saying I really disagree with that. It might be the only novel I’ve read that combines dystopia and fantasy as well as it does. Also, one thing I liked about War Storm in particular is that Victoria Aveyard writes from all different perspectives, including from characters serving as antagonists to the main character. This really adds a cool effect to the suspense of the story, as I found myself rooting for some of the “antagonists”, who had really compelling storylines and motives. Overall, I’m left feeling pretty positively about the series as a whole. I mean three out of four of the novels are among the best books I’ve ever read. King’s Cage will always taint my feelings a little bit, but I’m so glad War Storm was as good as it was. I definitely plan on reading Broken Throne now, and I had no intentions of doing that heading into this book. |
Characters: 9.5/10
-loved the new perspectives, specifically Iris
-really liked how the motives of the “antagonists” were all really justified and even made some of those characters rootable in some instances
Writing: 9/10
-I didn’t really notice anything noticeably good or bad
-the world-building/expansion was pretty well-done
Pace: 9.5/10
-there were more action scenes interspersed throughout than I expected
-generally a build-up to the end, meaning there were some filler scenes
Entertainment: 9.5/10
-first 100 pages were fine, but past that I was hooked
-was rarely bored even during the filler scenes
Average: 9.375/10
